The hard enamel pins are filled with mineral powder (cloisonné) in recessed areas to a level that is flush with the raised areas. The metal pins are then baked at a high temperature and then stoning polished with a special wheel which makes sure the colors and metal are flush. In the end, the pins' surface is shiny and flat with enamel in same level as the metal die lines – no raised and recessed areas are present.
